Sotto’s Wife’s Obstetrician Would Have Supported RH Bill – Doc’s Family

(SPOT.ph) In his August 13 anti-RH Bill speech at the Senate, Senator Tito Sotto identified Dr. Carmen Enverga-Santos as his wife Helen Gamboa’s obstetrician back in 1975, when the couple lost their five-month-old son Vincent Paul. Sotto had claimed that Dr. Enverga-Santos had told him that the birth control pills that his wife had taken made the baby’s heart weak. Dr. Enverga-Santos has passed away, so her family was quite shocked that her name was brought up in Sotto’s speech. Dr. Enverga-Santos’ daughter Lea posted a formal statement on Facebook. After getting permission from her, we are printing the full version of her statement:

“As one of Dr. Carmen Enverga-Santos’ children, [I must say] we were all surprised to hear her name brought up by Sen. Sotto during the deliberations on the RH Bill.

Anyone who knew her, including her family, colleagues in the medical field, her medical students, friends, confessor as well as her patients, knows that she would have supported the RH bill and would have openly expressed her support for the bill because of her concern for our country’s problems with overpopulation and its subsequent impact on poverty, quality of life issues, and the health of all mothers.”

Meanwhile, due to the plagiarized passages in his speech, Sotto is now in hot water for plagiarism. Only time will tell which issue the senator will effectively resolve first. — Spot.ph

Novelist Says Sotto Plagiarized Second RH Speech, Too

Plagiarism allegations continue to haunt Senator Vicente Sotto III. Days after it was reported that the first of his four-part speech was copied from an American female blogger, a similar allegation has surfaced, this time surrounding his second speech.

The charge comes from Miguel Syjuco, an award-winning Filipino novelist based in Canada.

Syjuco won the 2008 Man Asian Literary Prize. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, he said that Sotto’s second speech “lifted, verbatim, from three sources easily found online.”

The three passages questioned, one of which is from a Filipino blog entry, are found below, as cited by Syjuco.

Sotto’s speech:

Sanger was so intent on reducing family size that she seemed to not stop even at abortion. Many believe that under the right circumstances, Sanger would have condoned infanticide. Indeed she wrote in her book Woman and the New Race: “The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.”

A group said Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III’s privilege speech on Wednesday opposing the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill “copied entirely and almost word-for-word from an article” of a US-based blogger.

In a post on its website, the Filipino Freethinkers, one of the groups pushing for the passage of the RH bill, compared Sotto’s speech to a February 2011 article by a blogger called “Sarah, the healthy economist.”

In his speech, Sotto used phrases from the blog but without attribution, except for the expert opinion that Sarah also used as source.

Sotto denied plagiarizing the blogger’s work.

“Bakit ko naman iku-quote ‘yung blogger, ang kinu-quote ko si Natasha McBride (Why would I quote the blogger? I was quoting Natasha McBride),” Sotto said in a interview with ABS-CBN.

The allegation against Sotto comes after two controversial cases of plagiarism both in 2010.

One involved Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo who allegedly lifted without citation from legal experts abroad in his decision on World War II comfort women. Businessman Manny Pangilinan in 2010 also admitted that parts of his speech before Ateneo De Manila Univerisity graduates have been copied from celebrities’ speeches.

On top of hitting the senator for plagiarism, the Filipino Freethinkers said “Sotto’s reckless method of legislation is inexcusable.”

Sen. Vicente Sotto reinvents himself

I’m watching with fascination as Senator Vicente Sotto III reinvents himself – this time as THE opponent of women’s reproductive health rights.

Still, let’s not forget how he used another hot button issue to propel himself to political prominence, so much so that he was once touted to become the vice-presidential running mate of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for the 1998 presidential polls.

Arroyo dropped him like a hot potato after he was embroiled in one of the hottest political scandals involving a senator in post-Marcos history.

Many of you probably know I am referring to the scandal involving Sen. Sotto and suspected drug lord Alfredo Tiongco. I had to cover that extensively for South China Morning Post (HK) because Tiongco fled to Hong Kong and became the first – and only – person to be extradited from there upon the request of the Philippine government.

A month after then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared a State of National Emergency, following the arrest of Brig. Gen. Danny Lim and other army officers, her political adviser Gabriel Claudio met with American diplomat Joseph Novak.

In a cable dated March 22, 2006, US Ambassador to Manila Kristie Kenney filed this summary about Kovak’s meeting:

In light of recent political turbulence,President Arroyo has been reaching out to high-level members of the Catholic clergy in an effort to shore up support. Arroyo has also taken care not to cross the Church on two key issues: mining and population policy.

Kenney observed that –

Arroyo’s efforts appear to be bearing fruit: while a handful of bishops oppose her, the vast majority seem reluctant to be drawn into politics, a stance which effectively helps the president. Given its widespread influence (over 80 percent of Filipinos are Catholic), Arroyo will no doubt continue to work hard to maintain good links to the Church.
