MANILA – Filipino Catholics support Church teachings on abortion, divorce, same-sex marriage, and priesthood, but are opposed to its anti-contraception stance, a global survey revealed Sunday.

The survey of 12,036 respondents in 12 countries showed that among the Catholic teachings on these subjects, the faithful were most likely to veer farthest from the long-held beliefs on contraception.

Filipinos are among the world’s most loyal to the doctrines of the Church, ranking highest in their support for the prohibition on marriage for priests and the disallowance of abortion in all cases.

Uganda and Congo, respectively, are ahead of the Asian country in terms of their support for the prohibition of women priests, opposition to divorce, opposition to same-sex marriage, and opposition to gay marriage conducted by the Church.

France and Spain took the bottom spot of rankings in these subjects.

Not Pope Francis fans

Filipinos were the least generous in their praise for Pope Francis, with only 18 percent saying he did an excellent job since he was elected in March last year. The Italians were the most lavish in their accolades, with 74 percent saying he did an excellent job. Poland and the United States follow, with 59 percent saying he did an excellent job. In Argentina, where he hails from, 57 percent said he did an excellent job.
