Priest: Aquino’s Inclusion of RH Bill in Sona ‘Unacceptable’

Monday, July 23, 2012

A PRIEST lamented President Benigno Aquino III’s “expression of support” on the Reproductive Health (RH) bill during his State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday.

According to Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines–Episcopal Commission on Family and Life executive secretary Fr. Melvin Castro, it is unacceptable that the President of a predominantly Catholic nation would endorse the “anti-life measure.”

“We are deeply saddened and disappointed,” Castro said in a phone interview.

What is worse, he added, is that the endorsement of the measure comes at an unexpected part of the speech.

In his Sona, Aquino said the RH bill is the answer to the massive backlog in the education supplies like textbooks, and shortage of classrooms.

“We don’t see any connection between the education problem and the bill promoting and funding contraceptive usage,” Castro said.

The RH bill has long been one of the priority measures of the Aquino administration.

With this, Castro said they will now start reassessing their strategy on how to combat the passage of RH bill in Congress.

“We will plan. In the meantime, we shall pray and discern,” he said.

“The battle resumes,” he added.

The bill remains pending at the Senate and the House of Representatives. (HDT/Sunnex)
